## Content

## In Short
Ecobank Rwanda has signed a partnership with Fortis Green Housing to make homeownership more accessible. The deal pairs mortgage financing with sustainably built homes.

## What Happened
Ecobank Rwanda, part of the [Ecobank](/ecobank) group, is working with Fortis Green Housing to offer buyers a bundled path to purchasing a home.

Under the reported terms, the mortgage can cover up to 90% of a house’s cost. Financing can go up to Rwf1 billion, and repayment can run for as long as 20 years.

A mortgage is a long-term loan used to buy a home. The house is usually the “security” for the loan, meaning the bank can claim it if the borrower stops paying.

The homes in the partnership are described as sustainably built. In simple terms, that often means designs and materials that reduce energy or water use, or lower carbon emissions over time.

## Why It Matters
Housing affordability is a major constraint in Rwanda and across many African cities. Buyers often face a double problem, limited supply of quality homes and limited access to long-term credit.

By bundling homes with financing, Ecobank Rwanda and Fortis Green Housing are trying to reduce friction in the home-buying process. It also gives the bank a clearer pipeline of mortgage customers, while giving the developer a clearer path to sales.

The 90% loan-to-value level is notable. It reduces the upfront cash a buyer needs, but it can also increase risk if property prices fall or household income drops.

For fintech and proptech operators, the partnership signals continued interest from banks in structured housing finance products. Expect more deals that connect developers, lenders, and digital onboarding channels to shorten approval timelines and improve borrower screening.
