## Content

## In Short
Ecobank has signed an MoU with China’s Cross-Border Interbank Payment System, also called CIPS. The goal is to improve Renminbi, also called RMB, payment connectivity between China and Africa.

## What Happened
[Ecobank](/ecobank) said the agreement with CIPS will expand RMB payment and clearing links across its pan-African banking network, which covers 34 markets.

CIPS is China’s RMB payment and settlement network, similar to a shared rail that banks use to move money across borders. Tighter connectivity can mean fewer steps for banks and businesses when sending and receiving RMB.

Ecobank said the partnership should support smoother RMB payments, reduce settlement complexity, and improve access to cross-border payment channels. Settlement is the final step where money is confirmed and exchanged between banks.

The signing took place in Beijing and was attended by Togo’s Minister of Finance and Budget, on the sidelines of an official visit to China by Togo’s President of the Council, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé. Ecobank’s news listing dates the announcement to October 12, 2026.

Ecobank also said it inaugurated new Beijing office premises to deepen its presence in China, where it has operated since 2012. The bank added that its “Chinese Desks” across West, Central, and East Africa support clients with local market knowledge across trade finance, payments, cash management, and cross-border investment.

## Why It Matters
China remains Africa’s largest trading partner, and Ecobank cited bilateral trade of about $348 billion in 2025. As trade grows, payment infrastructure becomes a bigger operational issue, especially for importers and exporters that face delays, extra fees, and bank-to-bank routing complexity.

If the CIPS link reduces friction for RMB clearing, some Africa to China trade flows could settle faster and more predictably. That can help businesses manage cash flow and currency exposure, meaning the risk that exchange rates move against them between invoice and payment.

The move also signals that major African banks are investing in alternative cross-border rails beyond traditional correspondent banking, where transactions pass through multiple intermediary banks.
