MultiChoice is changing DStv pricing and package names from 17 September. The headline offer is DStv Premium at R799, but only with a 24-month contract.

## What Happened
[DStv](/dstv) Premium will be priced at R799, and that amount includes the access fee. The catch is that customers must commit to a 24-month contract to get that price.

The new pricing and package changes take effect on 17 September. Existing customers on DStv Access, Family, and Compact will be migrated to new tiers called Starter, Select, and Sports.

Compact Plus customers will move to Premium at R659 for 12 months. That is a time-limited offer, and it differs from the new R799 Premium price, which is tied to a longer contract.

In practice, this is a repricing and a repackaging move. A contract means you agree to pay for a fixed period, even if you cancel early, similar to how some mobile plans lock you in.

## Why It Matters
Pay TV in South Africa is under pressure from streaming platforms and cheaper bundles. By cutting the headline Premium price, MultiChoice may reduce churn, which is when subscribers cancel.

But the contract requirement shifts risk to consumers. It lowers the monthly cost, but it increases commitment, and it can make switching to streaming or downgrading harder.

The forced migration of older packages to Starter, Select, and Sports also matters for households tracking channel lineups and sports rights. If your plan name changes, you still need to confirm what content and viewing features are included.

For developers and operators building in media and entertainment, pricing and bundle design is a reminder that “subscription economics” is about retention, not just new sign-ups. Expect more experiments that blend discounts with longer lock-in periods.
