## Content

## In Short
Discovery is backing the Pfukani Mobile Clinic, a solar-powered mobile unit that brings breast and cervical health services to rural communities in Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga.

## What Happened
Discovery announced a partnership with the Breast Health Foundation and the Mpumalanga Department of Health to launch the Pfukani Mobile Clinic.

The clinic is a purpose-built medical unit designed for rural settings, with solar power for reliability when grid power is limited. It offers breast examinations, pap smears (a cervical screening test), biopsies (a small tissue sample taken for lab testing), and referrals into the public health system.

The partners say the mobile clinic builds on the earlier Pfukani Clinic at Tintswalo Hospital, launched in 2023. Since opening, the Tintswalo site has reportedly diagnosed about 175 women with breast cancer and completed more than 180 LLETZ procedures. LLETZ is a 15-minute outpatient treatment that removes abnormal cervical cells often linked to HPV, which is a common virus that can cause cervical cancer.

A key feature is AI-assisted breast ultrasound. This means software helps clinicians read ultrasound images, like a second pair of eyes, to flag higher-risk cases that need follow-up.

## Why It Matters
Late diagnosis is a major driver of cancer deaths, especially in rural areas where distance and cost delay care. In South Africa, breast cancer accounts for a large share of female cancers and a meaningful portion of cancer deaths, and many cases are detected late.

Mobile diagnostics can reduce travel time, shorten waiting periods, and improve referral pathways, which is the process of moving a patient from screening to confirmation and then to treatment.

For the health tech ecosystem, this is another sign that AI tools are moving beyond pilots into frontline services. The impact will depend on uptime, staffing, and how well the mobile unit connects patients to follow-on care once a risk is flagged. Discovery’s role also shows how private sector partners can fund and operationalise public health delivery when infrastructure is thin.
