## Content

## In Short
Discovery Green and Sasol are supplying renewable energy to Kruger National Park through Ampli Energy. The supply is equivalent to more than 25% of the park’s annual electricity consumption.

## What Happened
Discovery Green and Sasol have announced a private-sector renewable energy sponsorship agreement with South African National Parks (SANParks), starting with Kruger National Park.

The arrangement uses Ampli Energy, described as a month-to-month renewable energy product. In practice, this means SANParks is matching part of its electricity use with power generated from renewable sources, while still receiving electricity through the national grid.

SANParks said building large renewable power plants inside Kruger would require significant capital and land. The park’s land is better used for conservation and tourism facilities than for energy generation.

The announcement also highlights why Kruger is a priority site. Kruger is SANParks’ largest electricity user, and it accounts for about 70% of the organisation’s scope 2 emissions, which are indirect emissions from purchased electricity.

Sasol said it is using its Secunda complex as a “backstop offtaker” for Ampli’s renewable portfolio. Put simply, a large industrial user can help anchor demand so that renewable projects have a dependable buyer.

The companies said the renewable energy matching has already been running for the past few months.

## Why It Matters
Reliable electricity is a day-to-day operational issue for large sites like Kruger, which welcomed more than 1.8 million guests in 2025. A higher share of renewable supply can support energy resilience and reduce exposure to carbon-heavy grid power.

For the wider market, the deal is another example of how South Africa’s changing electricity rules allow clean power to be generated in one location and “wheeled” through the grid to a different customer. That model could become more common for other public institutions and large campuses that cannot, or should not, build generation on site.

The partnership also puts more attention on scope 2 emissions reporting. As more organisations measure and try to reduce purchased electricity emissions, demand for subscription-style renewable products is likely to grow.
