## What Happened
Vodafone and [Digital Virgo](/digital-virgo) said they will work together to integrate Vodafone Network APIs into Digital Virgo’s mobile-payment and monetisation products. The goal is to make mobile commerce more secure and less frustrating for users.

The partnership is built around the GSMA Open Gateway initiative, which is an industry effort to standardise how developers access certain mobile network capabilities. Vodafone and Digital Virgo say these standardised APIs should help merchants, operators, and digital service providers reuse the same security and identity checks across markets.

Two early use cases stand out.

First is replacing SMS one-time passwords, the short codes sent by text message, with “Number Verify”. Number Verify confirms a phone number in the background through the operator network, instead of asking the user to type a code.

Second is using a bundle of fraud and identity APIs during onboarding and account protection. Examples mentioned include Know Your Customer Match, which checks whether sign-up details match operator records, and SIM Swap checks, which flag when a number has recently been moved to a new SIM, a common fraud signal.

Digital Virgo said it serves 300+ merchants and works with more than 150 operators. Vodafone said the initial agreement covers five markets, with plans to expand.

## Why It Matters
For African merchants and platforms, especially in South Africa, the promise is fewer drop-offs at checkout and fewer account takeovers. This matters because every extra login step can reduce conversion, while weak verification can raise fraud losses.

For telcos, Open Gateway-style APIs also create a clearer way to sell “operator-grade” identity and security services to enterprises, not just connectivity. That can open new revenue lines beyond airtime and data.
