## Content

## In Short
DHL Express and Absa Group have signed a memorandum of understanding to expand DHL’s GoTrade programme across Sub-Saharan Africa. The goal is to help more African small and medium-sized enterprises, or SMEs, sell across borders.

## What Happened
On 3 September 2026, DHL Express and Absa Group signed an MoU, which is a formal agreement that sets out how two parties plan to work together.

The deal focuses on scaling DHL GoTrade, a programme designed to help SMEs handle cross-border trade. Cross-border trade means selling to customers in other countries, which often adds friction like customs paperwork, shipping costs, and payment delays.

While the partners have not shared detailed rollout targets, the intent is to expand GoTrade support across more markets in Sub-Saharan Africa. DHL brings logistics and customs expertise. [Absa](/absa) brings banking reach and SME relationships.

## Why It Matters
For many African SMEs, the hard part of exporting is not demand, it is execution. Shipping reliability, customs clearance, and predictable delivery times can decide whether a small business keeps a buyer or loses them.

Partnerships like this can also reduce the learning curve. Trade training and hands-on support help founders understand documentation, duties, and how to price products for international delivery.

There is also a fintech angle. As banks push more services into business workflows, trade support can connect to related needs like working capital, FX, and collections. That makes it easier for SMEs to plan cash flow when sales and costs happen in different countries and currencies.
