## In Short
- CRDB Bank and TANESCO have launched a financing scheme to make electricity connections easier to afford.
- The plan targets rural and peri-urban households first, with an instalment option for urban customers.
- Tanzania says it now has nine million electricity connections, with all villages connected.

## What Happened
Tanzania’s Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi attended the signing and launch of a new electricity connection financing scheme between TANESCO and [CRDB Bank](/crdb-bank) on October 2, 2026.

The goal is to remove the upfront cost that stops many households and small businesses from getting connected to the grid. Upfront cost is the one-time fee you pay before a service starts, similar to an installation fee for home internet.

Under the scheme, CRDB Bank will cover the TZS 27,000 electricity connection fee for 500,000 customers in rural and peri-urban areas each year. For urban customers, the arrangement allows connection costs to be paid in instalments through TANESCO.

Ndejembi linked the push for more connections to national energy investments, including new generation like the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project. He said new megawatts only matter if power reaches end users in homes, hospitals, and factories.

## Why It Matters
For founders and operators, electricity access still shapes where you can run a shop, a workshop, a cold chain, or a small manufacturing line. Spreading connection fees over time can improve uptake, especially in rural and peri-urban areas where cash flow is tight.

The scheme also shows a practical public-private model for infrastructure adoption. A utility provides the service, and a bank helps customers manage the cost, which is a simple form of embedded finance.

If execution is smooth, Tanzania could see faster last-mile electrification, and more reliable demand growth for the grid. That matters as the country targets higher generation capacity by 2030 and beyond.
