## Content

## In Short
- Co-op Bank Kenya is seeing a shift in ownership toward local firms, including co-operatives and saccos.
- Local firms added 98.97 million shares since the start of 2025, valued at about Sh3.75 billion.
- Local individual investors sold down during a strong price rally and after a higher dividend.

## What Happened
Co-op Bank Kenya shares have attracted heavier buying from local firms since the start of 2025. Disclosures show local companies held 4.88 billion shares in July, up from 4.78 billion at the end of December 2024.

That moved local firms’ stake to 83.21% from 81.53%. The added 98.97 million shares are valued at about Sh3.75 billion.

Over the same period, local individuals reduced their holdings by 95.48 million shares to 966.29 million. Their stake dropped to about 16.4% from 18.1%.

A big factor is Co-op Bank’s ownership structure. Saccos, which are member-owned savings and credit co-operatives, control 64.56% through an investment vehicle, Co-opholdings Co-operative Society Limited. The remaining shares are free float, meaning they trade openly on the Nairobi Securities Exchange.

The rally has been supported by earnings and dividend expectations. Co-op Bank maintained a Sh1.50 per share dividend from 2022 to 2024, then raised it to Sh2.50 in 2025, a 66.7% increase.

The share price has also climbed strongly. It closed at Sh37.85 recently, up from Sh16.91 on December 30, 2024, according to the report.

## Why It Matters
For Kenya’s public markets, this is another sign that institutional and corporate capital is becoming more dominant in blue-chip counters. Firms often take a longer-term view than retail investors, which can reduce short-term selling pressure.

For founders and operators watching the banking sector, stronger bank valuations and dividends can influence how capital flows. When listed banks look attractive, some investors rotate money away from higher-risk assets, including early-stage tech.

It also highlights how co-operative ownership can shape market behavior. With saccos already holding a controlling position, additional accumulation by local firms can further concentrate voting power and reduce the free float available for everyday trading.
