## Content

## In Short
Citi and Coinbase are expanding their collaboration to connect stablecoin payments with traditional fiat payments. The goal is to reduce the operational work for businesses that want both banking rails and blockchain rails.

## What Happened
[Citi](/citi) said it will deepen its work with Coinbase to help corporate and institutional clients move between fiat currency, meaning government-issued money like dollars, and stablecoins, meaning crypto tokens designed to track a fiat price.

First, Coinbase will use Citi Services’ Virtual Account Wallet via Banking-as-a-Service, which is when a bank provides regulated account infrastructure through APIs, to power Coinbase Virtual Accounts. Citi said this gives Coinbase payments customers bank account-like features to receive, hold, and send funds. Incoming fiat can be automatically converted into stablecoins.

Second, Citi will let its institutional clients accept stablecoin payments at checkout through [Spring](/spring), Citi’s payment acceptance platform. The stablecoin acceptance is powered by Coinbase Payments. Citi said stablecoins received at checkout will be automatically converted into fiat, with Citi settling funds as the bank of record, meaning the regulated bank that ultimately holds and settles the money.

Citi positioned the move as part of its broader digital assets strategy, focused on connecting cash management and securities services to digital networks without clients building separate systems.

## Why It Matters
For businesses operating across markets, including parts of Africa where settlement delays and FX constraints can affect cash flow, stablecoins are increasingly used as a faster value transfer rail. But many companies still need regulated banking accounts for payroll, taxes, supplier payments, and reporting.

This Citi and Coinbase setup is designed to make that bridge simpler. It also shifts complexity, custody, and parts of compliance burden away from merchants who want to accept stablecoin payments without directly managing crypto wallets.

If adoption grows, more payment providers and banks may feel pressure to offer similar stablecoin-to-fiat conversion and settlement options for enterprise payments.
