## Content

## In Short
- CIB received preliminary approval from the Central Bank of Egypt to establish yomo digital bank.
- CIB plans to invest $300 million into the yomo Holding digital banking platform.
- Yomo will be a separately licensed, digitally native bank in Egypt, but it still needs final regulatory approval before launch.

## What Happened
CIB said it received preliminary approval from the Central Bank of Egypt to establish yomo digital bank. The bank said the move follows Egypt’s digital banks framework introduced in 2023.

CIB is putting $300 million into yomo Holding’s digital banking platform. The plan is to deploy it first in Egypt as an independently licensed and digitally native bank, meaning it is built to operate mainly through apps and online channels, not branches.

The preliminary approval allows yomo to move into the next phase of readiness work. That includes operational setup, technology build-out, and customer preparation. CIB said yomo’s services will only launch after it receives full regulatory approval.

## Why It Matters
Egypt’s digital banking framework is starting to translate into concrete projects from large incumbents. If yomo gets final approval, it could add another regulated option for customers who want faster onboarding, always-on service, and app-first money management.

A separately licensed digital bank structure also matters for governance and risk. It typically means capital, compliance, and reporting are handled under the new entity’s licence, even if it is backed by a major parent bank.

For the wider African [Banking](/categories/banking) and fintech ecosystem, the deal is a reminder that traditional banks are increasingly building digital-native units alongside their existing offerings. It also signals that regulators are willing to consider new licence types, as long as controls and consumer protection keep pace.
