## Content

## In Short
- CashAfrica is rolling out tap-to-pay at Chicken Republic outlets across Nigeria.
- The first phase covers 54 locations in Lagos, then expands to 350 outlets in 25 states.
- CashAfrica says contactless payments could become mainstream in Nigeria within eight months.

## What Happened
[CashAfrica](/cashafrica), a contactless payment infrastructure startup, has partnered with Chicken Republic to push tap-to-pay payments across the fast-food chain’s nationwide footprint.

Tap-to-pay is a contactless card payment method that works by tapping a card or phone on a compatible terminal, like “touch and go” instead of inserting a card. It typically relies on NFC, which is a short-range wireless feature used for payments.

The rollout starts with 54 Chicken Republic branches in Lagos. CashAfrica says it will then expand to the chain’s remaining 296 branches, reaching about 350 outlets across 25 states.

CashAfrica was co-founded in 2024 by CEO Malik Asamu and CTO Bello Opeyemi. The startup says it hit 100,000 transactions by the end of 2025. It also claims that 90% of first-time users stick with tap-to-pay as their preferred option when it is available.

CashAfrica says its tap-to-pay service works across NFC-enabled POS terminals used by merchants, including smaller retail shops, supermarkets, and fuel stations. Customers do not pay extra fees, while merchants pay transaction fees that range from 0.3% to 1.5% depending on volume.

The company previously worked with [PalmPay](/palmpay) during beta testing, where it saw higher uptake among users aged 20 to 30.

## Why It Matters
Nigeria still has low contactless payment usage compared to global markets, where Mastercard reports contactless makes up over 75% of in-person card transactions. Distribution is a major bottleneck, many merchants do not have contactless-enabled terminals, and many consumers still do not know they can pay by tapping.

Chicken Republic gives CashAfrica a high-frequency use case, everyday food purchases, and a large retail footprint. If customers repeatedly see tap-to-pay at checkout, awareness and habit can build faster than through bank-led campaigns alone.

The partnership also tests whether contactless can overcome common concerns in Nigeria, including fear of fraud and confusion about no-PIN payments. For payment startups, strong merchant distribution and predictable in-person spending categories are often what turns a payment feature into a daily behaviour.
