## Content

## In Short
- CANEX Create-Thon 2026 is a pan-African creative technology competition across gaming, video, and music.
- It comes with a US$50,000 prize pool, plus additional prizes for top country submissions.
- Finalists will get a chance to showcase at CANEX Weekend 2026 in Lagos.

## What Happened: CANEX Create-Thon 2026 Pan-African AI Build Sprint
CANEX Create-Thon 2026 has opened for registrations, targeting African creators on the continent and in the diaspora. The programme is organised under Afreximbank’s CANEX initiative and is being run in partnership with Gebeya.

The competition is built around a four-day build sprint, which is a short, intense period where teams ship a working prototype fast. Participants will use Gebeya’s DALA Studio tooling, which includes AI technology and compute resources, meaning the cloud processing power needed to run and test AI features.

Creators can enter one of three categories. Gaming covers African-inspired games and interactive experiences. Video focuses on storytelling and production using AI-assisted tools, for example AI support for visuals or editing. Music is for AI-supported sound creation and music experiences.

Eligibility is broad. Applicants must be 18 or older and can apply as individuals or teams. Submissions must be original and built during the official sprint using the DALA Studio environment.

## Why It Matters: AI Tools And Exposure For Africa’s Creator Economy
Cash prizes matter, but the bigger value is access to practical AI tooling and mentorship while building. For many creators, compute costs and technical support are the main blockers to turning an idea into a demo.

The link to CANEX Weekend 2026 in Lagos also creates a clear showcase path. That exposure can help teams find partners, clients, or follow-on funding, especially for projects that sit between media and software.

For operators watching Africa’s creator economy, competitions like this are also a signal. More organisations are treating gaming, music tech, and video tooling as serious venture and product categories, not side projects.
