## Content

## In Short
Bujeti is expanding beyond corporate cards into a broader finance stack. It wants to act like a virtual CFO for African businesses, using AI to explain spending and improve decisions.

## What Happened
[Bujeti](/bujeti) started as a way for African companies to issue expense cards to employees. The startup was founded in 2021 by former Paystack tech lead Cossi Achille Arouko and COO Samy Chiba.

Today, the company says more than 1,000 teams use Bujeti for spend management, payments, payroll, and tax management. Spend management means setting rules for company spending, tracking it, and approving it, like giving every team a controlled budget envelope.

Bujeti has also enabled cross-border payments for businesses. That is money movement across countries and currencies, with workflows like approvals, audit trails, and bookkeeping records attached. Arouko says the company is avoiding consumer remittances because margins are thin and competition is heavy.

The bigger shift is AI. Bujeti is now “baking AI” into its finance tools to help businesses understand what their financial structure means, not just to store transactions. In practice, this points to AI-generated insights, faster reporting, and alerts that feel closer to what a CFO or finance manager would do.

## Why It Matters
Many African SMEs still run finance operations across disconnected tools. Cards live in one place, payments in another, payroll in another, and reporting is often manual.

If Bujeti can become the system of record, meaning the central ledger that stores decisions and transaction history, it can stay valuable even as banks and payment rails make transfers easier. A better ledger also helps with compliance, audits, and tax reporting, especially when companies operate across multiple African markets.

The race now is less about who issues cards and more about who owns the workflow, the approvals, and the reporting layer.
