# Bekia Raises $765K Seed to Digitise Egypt’s Recycling

## What Happened
[Bekia](/bekia), an Egyptian waste tech startup, has closed $765,000 in seed funding to digitise Cairo’s mostly cash-based recycling trade. The round was led by Madica, with follow-on investment from Catalyst Fund and Jambaar Capital.

Bekia started in 2017 as a consumer app. Households could book waste pickups, materials were weighed, and customers were paid digitally. Since then, the company has shifted toward being a data and software layer between informal collectors, households, and recycling plants.

The company says it has diverted more than 25,000 tonnes of waste from landfill. It also reports 2,400 independent collectors onboarded and 100,000 retail clients, with 97% of them women. Bekia claims platform throughput has grown sevenfold since 2023, with enterprise retention above 95%.

Bekia says it makes money from corporate waste contracts, margins on material sales, and a refurbished electronics line launched in June 2026.

## Why It Matters
Egypt is pushing for higher recycling rates, but targets are hard to enforce without records. Egypt generates about 60,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste per day, and much of it ends up in unmanaged landfills. The government wants the national recycling rate to rise from around 37% in 2024 to 60% by 2027.

Bekia’s bet is that better transaction data can formalise parts of the supply chain. That includes proving where materials came from and how much emissions were avoided.

Bekia Next, the company’s new B2B SaaS product, is designed to turn collection data into audited CO2 avoidance reports. This matters for companies facing Scope 3 reporting rules, meaning they must account for emissions in their wider value chain, not just their own operations.

The company says the seed funding will go toward engineering hires, scaling the subscription product, and early testing in a second African market.
