## In Short
- Algeria’s BDL has launched a new bus financing scheme for passenger transport professionals.
- The loan can cover up to 90% of the bus purchase price, with a minimum 10% down payment.
- Repayment can run for up to 10 years, with a possible grace period of up to six months.

## What Happened
[Banque de Développement Local (BDL)](/banque-de-developpement-local) says it has launched a financing scheme for passenger transport operators who want to buy new buses. The BDL financing offer is part of a national programme to renew Algeria’s passenger bus fleet.

Under the terms shared by the bank, the financing can cover up to 90% of the vehicle price. Transporters are expected to contribute a personal deposit starting from 10%.

BDL says borrowers can repay the loan over a period of up to 10 years. It also allows a payment deferral of up to six months. A deferral is a short grace period where the borrower does not pay instalments right away, which can help operators start running routes before full repayments begin.

The bank added that approvals will depend on eligibility criteria and the bank’s usual review process. It also plans to use its branch network across Algeria’s wilayas, meaning provinces, to guide applicants through information, paperwork, and submission.

## Why It Matters
Replacing older buses is a practical route to improving safety and service quality in public transport. Newer vehicles generally come with better maintenance profiles, lower breakdown risk, and updated safety features.

For small and mid-sized transport operators, the biggest barrier is usually the upfront cost. A 90% financing ceiling and a long repayment term can reduce pressure on cash flow. Cash flow is the money a business has available day to day to keep operating.

The branch-led outreach also suggests the programme is targeting adoption at a local level, not only in major cities. That could make it easier for eligible operators in smaller markets to access credit and renew fleets.
