## Content

## In Short
- AXIAN and the African Development Bank (AfDB) have launched a digital finance programme to support more than 34,000 women-led businesses across Africa.
- The programme will use mobile money and other digital financial products, including lending and business support.
- The announcement references a previously approved $160 million AXIAN loan, not a new funding round for MVola.

## What Happened
AXIAN and the African Development Bank launched a digital finance programme on 2 September 2026. The programme aims to support more than 34,000 women-led businesses across Africa, including in Madagascar.

The initiative will provide digital financial products. That includes lending, which is credit provided to a business with a repayment plan. It also includes financial literacy and business support, meaning training on money management and practical help to run and grow a business.

A key delivery channel is [MVola](/mvola), AXIAN’s mobile money service. Mobile money is a wallet on your phone that can store value and let you send, receive, and pay, similar to a bank account but built for everyday phone use.

AfDB’s statement also points to a previously approved $160 million loan to AXIAN. This is not being described as fresh capital raised by MVola, and it should not be read as a new MVola funding round.

## Why It Matters
Women-led SMEs often struggle to access working capital, which is the cash needed to buy stock, pay suppliers, and cover day-to-day operations. When lending is bundled with financial education and business tools, it can improve repayment outcomes and business survival.

For AXIAN, pushing more SME services through MVola can increase active usage and transaction volumes. For AfDB, the partnership fits a wider push to expand financial inclusion, which means bringing more people and small businesses into formal financial services.

The details to watch next are eligibility rules, interest rates, and how the programme will work across different African markets. These factors will determine how many small businesses can actually take up loans and keep using digital payments long term.
