## Content

## In Short
Atlas Finance has reached 300 branches across South Africa. The lender says the footprint supports access to credit in underserved communities.

## What Happened
Atlas Finance said it has hit a milestone of 300 branches nationwide. The company positions the branch network as a way to expand financial inclusion, meaning more people can use formal financial services like credit.

The announcement lands at a time when many banks and lenders are shrinking their branch networks. Branch closures are often driven by cost and a shift to digital channels, like apps and online banking.

Atlas Finance argues that physical locations still matter for its customers. Niresh Gopichand, the company’s Risk Director, said branches are often “the first point of trust” for people who feel excluded by traditional banking. He added that customers value being able to ask questions face to face and understand loan processes before taking credit.

The company was founded in 1994 and focuses on short-term loans. It says it has served more than three million South Africans over the past three decades.

## Why It Matters
For lenders that serve lower income and cash-based customers, digital-only access can be a barrier. Data costs, smartphone access, and low confidence in online processes still limit adoption in parts of South Africa.

A branch-led strategy can help with onboarding, identity checks, and customer support. These are steps that can be difficult to complete on a phone, especially for first-time borrowers.

The flip side is cost. Running 300 locations adds rent, staffing, and security expenses. Investors and operators will watch whether Atlas Finance can keep defaults under control, while maintaining margins in a tougher credit environment.
