## Content

## In Short
Anchor has relaunched Cards 2.0. It is a card issuing product for African businesses that need virtual USD Mastercard cards for cross-border payments and online spending.

## What Happened
[Anchor](/anchor) says it rebuilt its card infrastructure after hearing consistent complaints about reliability in African card programs.

For many fintechs and online businesses, card issuing is not just about creating a card number. It is also about staying online through regulation changes, foreign exchange constraints, and shifting approval rates from global merchants.

Cards 2.0 focuses on issuing virtual USD Mastercard cards. These are digital cards, like a normal bank card but used online, and they are priced and billed in US dollars.

Anchor says the updated product can support higher spending volumes. It also lets businesses issue multiple cards per user. Companies can create, fund, and freeze cards through a single API, which is a software connector that lets products talk to each other. Webhooks also provide real-time card activity updates, which are automated alerts sent to a business when something changes.

Anchor is positioning Cards 2.0 as part of its wider banking-as-a-service stack. Banking-as-a-service means companies can offer bank-like features, such as accounts and cards, using APIs instead of building everything from scratch.

The company launched in 2022 and has expanded beyond bank accounts into payments and cards. Anchor says it processed more than ₦1 trillion in transactions in 2024 and worked with over 400 businesses.

## Why It Matters
Reliable USD virtual cards are a key tool for African businesses paying for global software subscriptions, advertising, cloud services, and travel.

When card providers change terms or shut down services, startups can lose checkout revenue and customer trust overnight. A more stable card issuing layer could reduce that operational risk for fintechs and other platforms building cross-border payment products.
