## What Happened: Airtel Africa Q1 2027 Results And Airtel Money Growth
[Airtel](/airtel) Africa said customer growth accelerated in the quarter, with smartphone penetration reaching 51%. That matters because more smartphones typically means more data usage and more paid digital services.

Average data usage per customer climbed from 7.8GB to 10.6GB per month. The company said this drove a 56.3% increase in data traffic across its network and supported a 10.3% increase in data ARPU in constant currency. ARPU means average revenue per user, a simple way to track how much customers spend.

On the mobile money side, Airtel Africa reported 56.5 million Airtel Money customers, up 23.3%. It said annualised TPV, meaning the value of transactions processed over a year, rose to more than $245 billion.

Financially, reported revenue rose 31% to $1,853 million, with constant currency revenue growth of 21.1%. EBITDA margin increased to 50.1%, up 206 basis points year on year, which the company linked to cost optimisation, despite higher energy costs.

Airtel Africa also increased capex, meaning network investment spending, to $389 million from $121 million a year earlier. It added more than 920 sites in the quarter and expanded fibre length to 82,100km.

The Nigeria 900MHz renewal is also a key regulatory and infrastructure step. Low-band spectrum like 900MHz generally travels farther and penetrates buildings better, which supports coverage and service quality.

Finally, repeating London as the preferred listing venue for the Airtel Money IPO suggests Airtel Africa is still working toward a public market plan for its fintech unit. Airtel Africa’s board also approved a share buyback of up to 1% of issued share capital. By 30 June 2026, it had repurchased about 10.2 million shares for $46.6 million.
