## In Short
- The African Development Bank and Equity Bank Kenya have announced a USD 60 million Trade Finance Transaction Guarantee Facility.
- The facility can provide guarantees of up to 100% to confirming banks.
- The aim is to widen trade finance access for Kenyan SMEs and local corporates.

## What Happened
The African Development Bank and Equity Bank Kenya announced a USD 60 million Trade Finance Transaction Guarantee Facility on October 15, 2026. Trade finance is the short-term funding and risk cover that helps businesses import and export goods, for example by using letters of credit.

The new facility is structured as a transaction guarantee. That means the African Development Bank will back Equity Bank Kenya on specific trade deals so other banks are willing to confirm them. A confirming bank is the bank that promises to pay a seller once shipping documents check out.

Under this agreement, the guarantee can cover up to 100% of the confirming bank’s risk. In plain terms, it reduces the chance that a bank loses money if the buyer cannot pay.

The partners say the facility is targeted at Kenyan small and medium-sized enterprises and larger local companies that still struggle to access affordable trade credit. It is also meant to support higher volumes of trade transactions routed through the banking system.

## Why It Matters
Many African SMEs have customers and suppliers across borders, but they often get stuck at the payment step. Banks may refuse to issue or confirm trade instruments, or they price the risk too high.

A guarantee facility can unlock more trade lines without Equity Bank Kenya needing to tie up as much capital for every deal. That can translate into faster approvals for importers and exporters, and more predictable cash flow.

For Kenyan founders and operators, this matters beyond “banking news”. Trade finance is often what decides whether a business can stock inventory, fulfill procurement contracts, or scale regional distribution. Tools like [Tradeflow](/tradeflow) can help businesses track trade operations, but access to bank-backed guarantees is still a key part of executing cross-border trade in practice.
