## Content

## In Short
Absa has become the first African bank to invest in Lendable’s blended-finance strategy. The move was announced as Lendable MSME Fintech Credit Fund 2 closed at $255 million.

## What Happened
On October 12, 2026, [Absa](/absa) and [Lendable](/lendable) said Absa participated in Lendable MSME Fintech Credit Fund 2 (LMFCF2). The fund targets debt financing for fintech lenders that serve MSMEs, meaning small businesses like local traders and growing SMEs.

Absa invested in the fund’s senior notes. Senior notes are the “safer” layer of a fund’s debt stack, they typically get paid back before riskier layers.

Absa also provided a subscription line to support the fund’s deployment. A subscription line is a short-term credit facility used to bridge timing, so a fund can make loans before all investor cash is fully drawn down.

Lendable said LMFCF2 reached its final close oversubscribed at $255 million. Oversubscribed means investor demand was higher than the amount the fund planned to raise.

A notable detail is that the senior tranche of LMFCF2 carries an investment-grade rating. Investment-grade is a credit rating that signals lower default risk, and it is not common for blended-finance vehicles.

## Why It Matters
This deal is a signal that African financial institutions are starting to allocate capital into global emerging-market private credit strategies, not only relying on development finance institutions (DFIs), foundations, or family offices.

For African fintech lenders, more capital in these funds can translate into larger and more stable debt lines. That can help them offer working capital and other credit products to underserved MSMEs across Africa, as well as in Asia and Latin America.

For Absa, the investment provides exposure to a diversified pool of asset-backed loans. Asset-backed means the lending is secured by underlying receivables or loan portfolios, rather than being unsecured bets on a company’s balance sheet.

Lendable also highlighted its data-led underwriting and its Maestro risk engine. In simple terms, this means the firm uses software and performance data to price risk and decide who gets funded.
