## Content

## In Short
- Absa is shifting its retail strategy toward fintech partnerships and embedded banking.
- The bank wants to reach younger customers inside the apps they already use.
- A new payments tool is being prepared for small township businesses.

## What Happened
[Absa](/absa) is looking for more fintech partnerships as it tries to win new customers through embedded banking. Embedded banking means putting bank services inside another app, so users do not have to switch apps to pay, save, or invest.

The push is part of a broader pivot under group CEO Kenny Fihla. Absa also brought in Sitoyo Lopokoiyit, the former head of M-Pesa, to lead personal and private banking. Lopokoiyit told Semafor the goal is to meet Gen Z and younger users where they already spend time, rather than relying on traditional marketing.

One recent example is the bank’s partnership with [EasyEquities](/easyequities). The integration puts a retail investing platform inside Absa’s banking app, which can lower friction for first-time investors. It also gives EasyEquities access to Absa’s large retail customer base, reported at around 12 million clients.

Absa is also preparing a payments tool that links personal bank accounts directly to small township businesses. In practical terms, this could make it easier for customers to pay local merchants and for those merchants to receive money quickly, without extra steps.

## Why It Matters
South African banks are competing for customers who grew up with instant transfers and mobile money. If Absa can make banking feel “invisible”, it could reduce churn and increase usage by making payments and investing part of everyday workflows.

For fintechs, partnerships like this can be a faster route to distribution than building a customer base from scratch. For township businesses, simpler account-to-merchant payments could improve cash flow and reduce reliance on cash, if fees and onboarding are kept low.
