## Content

## In Short
- 4G Capital signed a new partnership with IFC under the Catalytic First Loss Guarantee (CFLG) Program.
- The deal is aimed at expanding financing for Kenya’s micro and small businesses, including women-owned enterprises.
- Across three CFLG transactions in Kenya, partners expect to catalyze about $144.4 million in local-currency lending.

## What Happened
4G Capital announced a partnership with IFC on August 5, 2026, to expand credit for Kenyan micro and small businesses. The partnership sits under the Catalytic First Loss Guarantee program, a structure where IFC takes the first share of losses if loans go bad, so lenders can approve more loans with less risk.

Under the wider CFLG initiative, IFC is also working with Equity Bank Kenya and KCB Bank Kenya Limited. IFC said the three transactions together are expected to catalyze about $144.4 million equivalent in local currency lending to microenterprises, women-owned businesses, and climate-focused enterprises.

The CFLG is delivered under IFC’s $4 billion MSME Platform. MSME means micro, small, and medium enterprises, basically the small businesses that make up most employers. IFC committed $24.2 million across the three transactions, backed by $11 million from the International Development Association Private Sector Window, a concessional funding pool used to de-risk private sector lending.

IFC said the structure targets an 11:1 leverage ratio, meaning each dollar of first-loss capital is intended to support roughly $11 in lending.

## Why It Matters
Kenya’s MSMEs account for about 90% of businesses and employ more than 15 million people, but access to affordable working capital remains tight. IFC estimates the financing gap for MSMEs at nearly 21% of GDP.

For [4G Capital](/4g-capital), the partnership could mean more headroom to lend digitally, including to women-owned enterprises that often face stricter collateral and pricing hurdles. IFC also said it will provide capacity building support, which usually means help with credit processes, risk management, and product design so lenders can keep loan growth sustainable.
