National Bank of Malawi (NBM) is a commercial bank serving individuals, SMEs, and corporates in Malawi with **retail**, **corporate**, **international**, and **asset finance** banking.

NBM traces back to **1971**, when **Standard Bank of Malawi** and **Barclays Bank of Malawi** merged to form the bank, which later listed on the **Malawi Stock Exchange** in **August 2000**. It is majority-owned by **Press Corporation plc** (about 51.5%), with **Old Mutual Group** (about 20.3%) and public shareholders (about 28.2%) holding the rest. NBM acquired **97.05%** of **Indebank** in 2015, and in 2022 expanded regionally by acquiring a shareholding in Tanzania's **Akiba Commercial Bank (ACB)**, an SME-focused bank with 18 branches.

As of December 2025, NBM reports total assets of about **MWK 2.49 trillion** and a record profit after tax of **MWK 197,970 million**, making it Malawi's leading bank by assets and earnings.
