# Why Vibra shut down

Vibra, a Dragonfly Capital-backed Web3/crypto trading app from African Blockchain Lab aiming to drive peer-to-peer digital-asset adoption in Africa, shut down its Nigerian operations around July 2023 (publicly reported by TechCabal in October 2023), with users citing persistent KYC, withdrawal and account-verification problems.

## Summary

Here lies Vibra. It set out to bring peer-to-peer crypto trading to Africans through verified merchants and paid tutors. But users couldn't clear KYC or get their withdrawals out, and the $400-a-class tutor scheme cost more than it returned. Nigeria logged off first.

## Autopsy report

## What the product attempted

Built a mobile app for peer-to-peer cryptocurrency trading with verified merchants, aiming to drive mass adoption of digital assets and blockchain technology across Africa under parent company African Blockchain Lab.

## What worked

African Blockchain Lab raised $6 million in VC funding from investors including Lateral Frontiers and Dragonfly Capital; the app used a 'tutor' incentive model to teach and onboard new crypto users.

## Early warning signs

Users repeatedly complained in app reviews about difficulty completing KYC verification, making withdrawals, and verifying accounts; the tutor incentive model — paying tutors up to $400 per class — was expensive and unsustainable.

## What happened

Vibra shut down its Nigerian operations, sending a closure email to users on July 14, 2023. Co-founder Vincent Li told TechCabal (published October 17, 2023) that the shutdown was limited to Nigeria and framed it as a business pivot, but former employees and other sources indicated the startup had folded more broadly, with staff including its country manager departing.
