# Why RejaReja shut down

RejaReja, the B2B e-commerce arm of Kenyan startup MarketForce supplying FMCG goods to informal retailers, was shut down on April 17, 2024 after failing to reach a sustainable, profitable model amid thin margins, price wars, and a funding winter that left much of a planned $40M round uncollected; MarketForce pivoted to a new social-commerce product, Chpter.

## Summary

Here lies RejaReja. It handed informal retailers wholesale goods and next-day delivery across five countries, moving nearly 160 million dollars in trade. Thin margins, price wars, and a funding round that never fully landed left it unable to restock its own runway.

## Autopsy report

## What the product attempted

A B2B e-commerce platform giving informal retailers access to popular FMCG goods at wholesale prices with delivery within 24 hours, scaling to 21 cities across five countries.

## What worked

Reached 270,000+ merchants, generated close to $160M in gross transaction volume and nearly 1 million orders, created 800+ jobs, and was Y Combinator-backed.

## Early warning signs

Aggressive multi-country expansion during the 2022 funding high left the company overextended when the funding winter hit; lender Pezesha filed a liquidation petition against MarketForce over unpaid debt.

## What happened

MarketForce repeatedly downsized RejaReja to extend runway, but with a capital-intensive, thin-margin, price-elastic distribution business and much of a promised $40M round not fully materializing amid the global funding winter and sector consolidation (e.g. the Wasoko-MaxAB merger), co-founder Tesh Mbaabu announced on April 17, 2024 that RejaReja could no longer continue; MarketForce pivoted to Chpter, an AI-powered social commerce platform.
