Patricia, founded in 2017, was a prominent Nigerian cryptocurrency exchange that popularized retail crypto trading and gift-card exchange in Nigeria, allowing users to buy, sell and trade Bitcoin and other assets against the naira.

## What worked

Patricia built one of Nigeria's most recognized retail crypto brands, reportedly reaching a valuation around $50 million, and sustained an active trading and gift-card exchange user base for years before its collapse.

## Early warning signs

Patricia suffered a $2 million hack to its Bitcoin and naira assets in January 2022 but did not disclose it publicly; it quietly imposed a partial withdrawal freeze and bought crypto from users for cash as a workaround. In April 2023 it launched a new 'Patricia Plus' app citing 'global congestion on the Bitcoin blockchain,' which briefly allowed unrestricted withdrawals before the freeze was reinstated days later, and management reportedly disclosed an internal liquidity deficit of 75 BTC alongside plans to lay off up to 80% of staff.

## What happened

The undisclosed January 2022 hack was only revealed publicly around May 2023, nearly 18 months later, when Patricia began converting customers' frozen fiat and crypto balances into 'Patricia tokens' (PUTX), an untradable native debt instrument, without users' consent. This unilateral conversion, combined with structural regulatory roadblocks imposed by the Central Bank of Nigeria on crypto businesses, caused a bank run and total collapse of user trust, and the platform effectively shut down by around June 2024.
