Gro Intelligence, founded in 2012 by Sara Menker, built an agricultural insights and data-analytics platform aggregating data from government agencies, trade organizations and weather services to help farmers, governments and corporate clients like Unilever make informed agricultural and climate-risk decisions, with offices in New York, Nairobi and Singapore.

## What worked

The company raised over $117 million total, including an $85 million Series B backed by Intel Capital and Africa Internet Ventures, built a client roster that included Unilever, and its founder Sara Menker was featured on the cover of TIME magazine in 2021 as the company sat on a large cash reserve.

## Early warning signs

Financial struggles became public in early 2024; founder Sara Menker was removed as CEO in February 2024 in favor of a 'strategic shift,' the company cut roughly 60% of its workforce in March 2024 without the notice required under the WARN Act, and it secured only an insufficient emergency bridge round in March 2024, followed by failed attempts to close deals with an Asian country, a Middle Eastern oil-exporting nation, and the U.S. government.

## What happened

Despite its large cash pile and marquee investors, Gro Intelligence never developed a clear, scalable product offering — its bespoke, consulting-style approach proved too complex for most farmers and left the company over-reliant on a handful of large clients.
