## What the product attempted

Positioned itself as 'the AliPay for Africa,' building a financial ecosystem connecting mobile money wallets and bank accounts to enable cross-border payments, wallet creation, balance holding and utility bill payments across Ghana, Nigeria and Kenya.

## What worked

Raised what was reported as Ghana's largest-ever fintech round and Africa's second-largest fintech seed round — about $32.8-32.9 million in March 2022, led by Insight Partners — and claimed to have processed over $1 billion in transactions with 1 million users.

## Early warning signs

In March 2022, just a week after its funding announcement, the Bank of Ghana ordered Dash to immediately halt operations for offering financial services without regulatory approval; by February 2023 reports questioned the accuracy of its user metrics and founder Prince Boakye Boampong was suspended as CEO.

## What happened

An internal audit found Boampong had misrepresented user numbers and allegedly diverted at least $8 million (with roughly $25 million reportedly unaccounted for); he was terminated and replaced by Kenneth Kinshua. With a roughly $500,000 monthly burn rate, no revenue, and high overhead across five countries, Dash could not recover and shut down in October 2023 after raising $86.1 million in total.
