## What worked

Raised $123M across eight funding rounds, making it Kenya's second most-funded e-commerce startup after Twiga Foods; at peak employed 1,800 staff and worked with 50,000 agents.

## Early warning signs

Cut ~50 jobs in early 2023, laid off 350 more staff in July 2023, closed Uganda operations after two years in 2023, then laid off 1,060 employees in June 2024 while seeking a rescue investor.

## What happened

Unable to attract capital on terms acceptable to stakeholders, Copia entered administration on May 24, 2024, with KPMG's Makenzi Muthusi and Julius Ngonga appointed administrators; after further layoffs and failed investor talks, the company began liquidating assets (trucks, warehouses, equipment) in July 2024 under Kenya's Insolvency Act to settle creditors.
