## What the product attempted

Bonto built a technology-driven cross-border payments platform focused on mobile money remittances and online foreign-exchange services, aiming to modernize how money moved into and out of Kenya.

## What worked

Bonto successfully secured a Central Bank of Kenya money-remittance license in early 2025 and, when winding down, fielded more than five acquisition offers after approaching over 50 fintechs to buy its license.

## Early warning signs

Founder Yoann Copreaux said FX margins collapsed and remittance fees were pushed toward zero by competition, while compliance costs kept rising — a combination he described as 'trying to build in the desert' against incumbents with legacy client relationships.

## What happened

After receiving its CBK license in early 2025, Bonto operated for only about eight months before its foreign-exchange margins collapsed and compliance costs became unsustainable. It halted transactions on August 15, 2025, tried unsuccessfully to sell its license to one of over 50 fintechs it approached, and formally shut down on September 22, 2025, with the CBK revoking its license shortly after under Regulation 44(2) of the Money Remittance Regulations.
