## Autopsy report

## What the product attempted

A consumer lifestyle payments app offering unlimited virtual dollar cards for cross-border payments, subscriptions and online purchases for Nigerian users.

## What worked

Operated for seven years (2017–2024) as part of Flutterwave's consumer offering, used by Nigerian customers for international subscriptions and purchases.

## Early warning signs

Extended downtime in 2022 followed an update from card partner Union54, which had faced a $1.2 billion chargeback fraud attempt; users reported ongoing card compatibility issues and merchant rejections (Netflix, Facebook, PayPal, Apple Music).

## What happened

With Barter representing only about 1% of Flutterwave's roughly $2 billion transaction volume, and following 2022 service disruptions tied to card partner Union54's fraud-related issues, Flutterwave announced in March 2024 that it would sunset Barter, citing 'a comprehensive analysis of market trends and evolving customer needs,' giving users about a month to withdraw remaining funds while it redirected focus to enterprise and remittance products.
