## About the product

Econet is a pan-African telecommunications and digital services group founded by Zimbabwean entrepreneur **Strive Masiyiwa**, offering mobile connectivity, fintech, and enterprise digital services for individuals and businesses.

Key capabilities include:

- **4G and 5G mobile services** for voice calling, SMS, data, and roaming, with tariffs and bundles priced in local and hard currency depending on the market.
- **AI-powered assistance** through **EcoChat AI** (built on the ChatGPT API) across voice, SMS, USSD, web, and app channels, plus **Yamurai**, a WhatsApp virtual assistant.
- **Self-service and account management** via **Web Self-Care** and the **My Econet** app.
- **Consumer and enterprise add-ons**, including **eSIM**, an online devices shop, gaming (YoGamez/YoFootball), and business services such as **A2P messaging**, **M2M connectivity**, **private 5G for mining**, **ERP**, and **data centre** hosting.
- **Mobile money**, through **EcoCash**, which holds close to full market share of Zimbabwe's mobile money sector.

Available on **Web**, **Android**, and **iOS**, with additional access via **USSD**, **SMS**, **voice**, and **WhatsApp**.

Incorporated in **1993** and launched in **1998** after a protracted legal battle with Zimbabwe's state telecom monopoly, Econet Wireless Zimbabwe was the group's founding operation and remains its flagship, with **11.78 million subscriptions** and **over 70% market share** as of mid-2025, listed on the **Zimbabwe Stock Exchange**.

The group's mobile network footprint spans **four African countries** under locally adapted brand names: **Econet Wireless** in Zimbabwe, **Econet Telecom Lesotho** (70% Econet-owned), **Econet Leo** in Burundi (formerly Econet Wireless Burundi, before a 2015 merger), and **Mascom** in Botswana (60% Econet-owned since 2019). Earlier telecom ventures in Nigeria and Kenya were divested years ago (Nigeria's business is now part of Airtel Nigeria). The group's separate technology arm, **Cassava Technologies** (including **Liquid Intelligent Technologies**), runs fibre, data-centre, and fintech businesses across dozens of countries, including a recently announced R3.6 billion investment in South Africa, under its own brands rather than the Econet Wireless name.

Target users include **mobile subscribers** across these markets and **enterprises** that need connectivity, messaging, private networks, ERP, or data centre services.
