DTB traces its roots to the **Diamond Jubilee Investment Trust**, founded in **1945** in Dar es Salaam to serve East Africa's Ismaili community, which split in 1965 into separate Kenyan, Ugandan, and Tanzanian entities; the Kenyan arm became **Diamond Trust of Kenya** in 1990. The group is an affiliate of the **Aga Khan Development Network**, with the **Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development** holding roughly **16.5%** of DTB Kenya, the group's Nairobi Securities Exchange-listed flagship. DTB also operated in **Burundi** from 2009 before selling its 83.67% stake in **Diamond Trust Bank Burundi** to a local investor consortium in a deal that closed **31 December 2025**, refocusing the group on its three core markets.

The group runs roughly **150 branches** across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, with consolidated group assets of around **KES 612 billion** (about **$4.7 billion**) as of mid-2025, and offers **bancassurance** products, including life and medical insurance, through partner arrangements.
