BNI traces back to **12 December 1919**, when the first branch of **Crédit Foncier de Madagascar** opened; it was renamed several times before becoming **Bankin'ny Indostria (BNI)** in 1975, when the state merged it with the industrial-financing arm of the **Banque Nationale de Madagascar**. Privatized in 1991 to **Crédit Lyonnais** (later part of **Crédit Agricole**), the bank passed to local ownership in 2014 when Crédit Agricole sold its 51% stake to **Indian Ocean Financial Holdings**, a consortium of Mauritius's **CIEL Group** and Madagascar's **AXIAN Group**, with the Malagasy government retaining a minority stake.

Today, BNI operates around **110 branches** and over **140 ATMs** across Madagascar, positioning itself as one of the country's leading banks for both retail and business banking.
