BCA was created on **1 September 1993**, when Cabo Verde's government split the commercial banking activities of the **Bank of Cabo Verde** into a standalone bank. Privatization was authorized in 1998, and **Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD)**, Portugal's state-owned bank, became strategic partner alongside **Banco Interatlântico** in 2000. In **January 2026**, CGD sold its **59.81%** stake in BCA to **Coris Holding**, a pan-African banking group owned by Burkinabe businessman **Idrissa Nassa**, for **€82 million**, with a public takeover bid launched for remaining shares since BCA is listed on the **Cabo Verde Stock Exchange**. The deal extended Coris Holding's presence to **11 African countries**, including Burkina Faso, Mali, Côte d'Ivoire, Senegal, Benin, Togo, Niger, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, and Chad.

BCA operates **34 branches** across all **9 inhabited islands** of Cabo Verde, and Cabo Verde's National Institute of Social Security holds a further **10%** stake.
